As a doctor I often exchange views with clinical psychologists. Many of them have told me that when we speak or write is necessary to pay close attention to what they say and, more importantly, how we say it because, for many people, has replaced the doctor's opinion to the importance of religion for its ability to to influence opinion in the social and the same behavior.
Indeed, like religion, the medical profession (and psychology in particular) has provided guidance and comfort to many people ... and, conversely, damaged other people. Indeed, precisely psychiatry / psychotherapy, in the last hundred and thirty of existence as a branch of medical science, has contributed to the oppression of women, people of color, gays and other labeling them as inferior beings psychologically (in the case of women and people of those, for example) or mentally pathological, as in the case of gays and other sexual minorities.
The effect of "pathologising" of certain groups was very deep. Sull'inferiorità theories of women have been used to justify their exclusion from leadership in the political, financial and monetary theories sull'inferiorità people of color have been used to justify choices policies clearly racist.
area of \u200b\u200bsexuality, psychology has been particularly "bad" and justified treatment of extremely brutal to those who have been cosider "sexually deviant". Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, girls who had an "excessive sexual desire" (for example, those who masturbated regularly) were considered abnormal and in many cases have been subjected to female circumcision, and until 1970, gay people could be interned in Facilities for the treatment of mental illness by their parents, and even today therapies such as' shock and the "chemical castration" psychiatric intervention are considered acceptable for paraphilias sexual ... among which include fetishism, sexual masochism, sexual sadism, fetishism and other trans practices near and dear to those who have my own preferences in terms of privacy. Why
psychology considers right and proper to interfere in what was a consensual sexual behavior in adults? Why even label such behavior as "sick"?
urban anthropology and founding member of the LSM, Dr. Gayle Rubin has described the way society views sex classifying sexual behavior or to belong to the class of behaviors sexually charmed "or behaviors" beyond limits ".
Basically, the company likes the stability and then the sex must be conventional, preferably within marriage, monogamous, private, not mercenary, procreative and vanilla.
Some lovers of BDSM, as I can be, also violates all these requirements in one go! Add to this that, perhaps, belong to social minorities Reed (women) or ethnic (non EU), then you're done and it is not an easy thing to be able to be accepted even within the BDSM community itself. According to Rubin
society expresses its worse when, especially hidden from anonymity and impunity, which provides a monitor, try to "eradicate" or even eliminate those who represent a behavior that the members of this society is "out of bounds."
The methods used are many excuses, including with religious or social disapproval, the application of laws or regulations that diverted are really just ... racial discrimination and classification of persons or behavior as "sick" without even first defining what to be considered as "healthy."
consider more closely, however, the psychiatric approach: actually theories have changed. Now masturbation is accepted, women can have sexual feelings and from a few years, homosexuality is no longer a mental illness.
The question that naturally arises as a consequence of this is: why psychiatry continues to pathologize BDSM and retains its contribution to the cloak of shame, secrecy, isolation (and subsequent loss of self-esteem), the BDSM community? More specifically, it justifies
: laws that criminalize the behavior BDSM, legal decisions that deny the legal custody of children to persons belonging to BDSM, and social discrimination in employment and more. That's why I address this fundamental problem with strength and resolve. After a lifetime of struggle, the homosexual community, has managed to declassify their condition from disease. Along the path will still be because society accepts this reality, but this is another story. How long before the BDSM community also will be able to get similar treatment?
Personally I do not hide myself and all those who know me know my habits in this area. Only after a series of threats unpleasantly series I had to darken my face from the photos I posted and change the province listed in my profile. Recently I spent an hour talking to upstream and comparing with a founder and director of the IPG Counseling Institute for Personal Growth in New Jersey / New York psychotherapy center. This person works for 19 years with two dozen therapists who are dealing with sexual minorities.
In this way I was able to touch as psychiatry has damaged people and how changes in the theories and psychiatric diagnostic nomenclature have contributed to positivization the personal and societal changes. I still vividly remember the memory of lesbians and gay men who were heavily discriminated against and sent to public service simply because of their sexual preference. I personally know of cases of items that have been withdrawn power over the children as they were, by definition, mentally disturbed, and others "for a mini-skirt worn out of service" have lost their jobs being considered dishonorable people. But most of all, I have a clear memory of a heavy baggage of shame and guilt that investment (and, in part, still invests) most worthy and estimable people just because lesbian and gay! Wonderful people who considered themselves "pathological" and therefore lower than the rest of society. Fortunately, we know, with great pleasure, the blossoming of pride and self-acceptance increased in each new generation of "sex discrimination". I personally think that
This process can also Acadie against the BDSM community but it is first necessary that the members of this group become aware of and accept in full for what they are. Only then can you deal positively with the professionals of psychiatry.
start with the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of the American Association Psyciatric which is practically the bible of mental health. The fourth edition of this tome of us as "paraphilic". What does this mean? That we are mentally ill simply because what we have in our fantasies. Does not matter if we put it into practice. No matter how we ome people in the rest of his life. No matter how behave in society or at work or at home. No matter if in all other respects we are "mentally healthy".
The DSM IV is not particularly logical in its classification of the diagnostic criteria for paraphilias. Some definitions are absolutely ridiculous: it is a fetish, for example, if you are excited by the silk underwear but if you feel excited by the use of vibrators, as vibrators are made specifically for use as sexual underwear it is not!
Other definitions have simply created to be both offensive and socially misleading at the same time: the definition of sexual sadist "the person has ACTED On These sexual Urges with nonconsenting person, or the sexual fantasies cause marked distress or Urges interersonal or difficulty. ". I have not translated precisely to avoid misunderstandings. In other words, if you are a sadist kidnap and torture anyone, or if the / your / or companion or find that you have fantasies of dominance and it asks for the divorce, or is it feels in a stressful situation because it is were advised that a sadistic means to be mentally ill!
Furthermore, as the Catholic Church, the DSM IV does not pose any distinction between fantasy and behavior ... yet, the Definition as given for sexual sadism tells us only that they must have "applicants, exciting ... intense sexual fantasies in which the physical or psychological suffering of the victim ... (sic) is sexually exciting .. ".
Among other things, such definition includes a large percentage of the population so as to be effectively unenforceable.
Beyond these logical inconsistencies, the most serious problem with the psychiatric classification of most of our behavior as paraphilias is that there are no logical reasons or justification for regarding the paraphilias of mental "illness" in real life. I wonder: where is the problem or the damage to the individual or company (including its broadest sense) beyond the offense to the individual sensitivity of some people? It may be argued with reason of the sexual abuse or any conduct non-consensual BDSM is consensual but the definition.
Why continue this witch hunt against their BDSM?
We'll talk about the next episode.
